VOMITOSE Zine Issue 1

Release date: 2005

Review:
This new zine is helmed by Rebecca with the help of a couple weird guys also from downunder in Australia/New Zealand. I gotta admit I'm usually easily pleased when it comes to grind zines, but this one is especially well done, head and shoulders above the rest... Clearly, great effort has been put into the making here with slick layout, pretty tasteful band selection, very detailed & well written reviews, interview questions that aren't too dumb... Yeah, this is definitely one of the better grind zines I've read in a while! Nice choice of interviews too with Bile, Hemdale (no, they didn't reform this is an old one from 1997!!!), Neuro Visceral Exhumation, Putrescence & Smothered Brothers... and also Disembowelment, Integrity & Meat Yard... The only possible flaw is the interview with me about Blue Holocaust, but this is personal, I just can't help but barf when reading interviews with my own self! Anyway, yeah Vomitose is a first-rate fanzine, I recommend you get a copy for yourself... I truly hope there'll be more issues of this one coming!!!

SEPTI-GORE Zine Issue 5, 6 & 7

Release date:
2005

Review:
Ok, I 've been slacking in the zine review department and the Septi-Gore staff managed to put out 3 new issues in meantime!!! I guess I'll just review them all at once... So this zine is still going really strong, this is pretty amazing work, again I'll say I've rarely seen someone so dedicated to put out new issues so quickly as Erik... The style of the zine is very blunt/no bullshit, raw, crude, offensive and explicit, but it gets the job done, it focuses on goregrind, noise and brutal death and that's it. A4 pages stapled together but it all looks quite good. Here's a quick rundown on all three of these fine issues:
Issue 5: First thing about these latest issues is that they seem to contain a lot more cool underground artwork than before, some pretty cool looking stuff in there! As usual, Erik seeks out only the most obscure gore bands out there and you'll find interviews with sick and obscure acts such as Posthuman Worm, Amnotic Fluid Fountain, Viscera, Splatterwhore, etc, etc... The great thing is also that Septi-Gore continues to focus on gore flicks as well, with a few film reviews and a cool interview with director Fred Vogel (Toetag Pictures/August Underground)
Issue 6: This one comes with a rad new logo, I think I like this one even better than the regular one... Interviewees are Scumfuck, Embalming Theatre, Abyss, Presenile Dementia Records & Necrotampon... Plus the usual Audio-Gore-Views...
Issue 7: This sickening tome is as solid as ever... Pulmonary Fibrosis, RHPP, Hipermenorrea, Anally Aborted Fetus, Urethra Records, Disembowelment get interviewed and there's tons more to read... I don't know if there's a yearly subscription option for this zine, but I'm sure you'd be guaranteed to get cool new issues all the time, Septi-Gore totally delivers!

BORN DEAD Issue 7

Release date: 2005

Review:
This is the seventh issue for this fine canadian zine, edited by Mike Alexander (of the band Putrescence); small format, top notch content... You've got things like a detailed, hour by hour journal of Mike's experience at Maryland Deathfest 2005, a really insightful and fun interview with Bile, a bunch of quick/sharp reviews on various grind/brutal metal records and finally a few smart-ass articles about various "societal issues"... Ok, I gotta admit some of these articles like the ones about canadian politics kind of went over my head! Still I strongly recommend this new Born Dead issue, if you're looking for something both clever AND about grind (it's really not that common!), this should do!

SEPTI-GORE Zine Issue 3 & 4

Release date: 2005

Review:
Thought I'd review the 2 latest issues of this fine zine all at once... Erik & his Septi-Gore Zine continue to explore the most obscure corner of the controversial underground gore/grind world, issues keep getting better and better... First, issue #3 comes with a color cover/cool new logo and features pretty in-depth interviews with bands like Terrorism, Bowel Stew, MDK and labels Kinetic Sleaze, Fecal Matter Discorporated, etc... A bunch of no-bullshit, straight to the point reviews are also thrown into the mix; the whole zine is pretty much 100 percent pure goregrind/noise/sleaze... I also really dig the sick movie reviews (Rigor Mortis, Murder Set-Pieces...)
Issue #3 drops the color cover but bulks up with 48 pages instead of 30! This is a pretty heavy tome and much heavier in contents than previous issues! More in depth reviews, plenty of interviews with a skilful job of mixing well known bands like Haemorrhage, Lymphatic Phlegm, LDoH and more obscure outfits you've probably never heard of like Gangrene, Anatomically Incorrect CrackWhore, Grindustry, Acrotomophilia, Nunriders of Black Doom, Anus Tumor... Probably the highlight of the issue is an interesting interview with Bill of Last House on the Right, who usually is a pretty elusive guy so it's nice to hear more about his label and occupations... What else to say?! This is probably the best Sept-Gore I've had to pleasure to read so far...This is pretty much the most active and awesomest zine about Goregrind right now so get with the program and get these issues right away!

NUCLEAR ABOMINATIONS Rag Issue 2

Release date: 2005

Review:
Ok, first, this thing is looks terrific... The layout here is just superb, a definite throwback at old school death metal zines with old flyers and cool death metal art adorning every pages, simply amazing! Content-wise, well this zine seems to have been years in the making because some of the news are a little outdated and a lot of the material reviewed dates back back to the 1999-2002 period... But, it's all good because Death Metal & Goregrind are basicly the only styles covered here and even though the editor is italian, he has an excellent grasp of the english language, his reviews are always really well-written and fully descriptive. The interviews in this zine are also very insightful... The interviewer is often pretty obsessive about details, especially on his Dead interview, and as a result you're getting a hell of a lot of information out of this stuff... You'll also find interviews with Demilish, Hideous Mangleus, Kaamos, Nuclear Death... Again, the choice of interviews shows how much the editor is turning himself towards the past... So if old school is your thing, definitely get your hands on this zine. It's also a perfect exemple of how every zine should be done! This is very close to a pro-done magazine, though for once the content is also worth it! This is made by the guy behind Nuclear Abominations Records (remember the great General Surgery demo ep's) and the italian Buio Omega shop... This is some fine work and a definite must-have!

DIS-ORGAN-IZED Issue #3

Release date: 2005

Review:
Alright, if you're looking for a paper zine all about goregrind, Dis-organ-ized is definitely one of the better ones. These guys don't skimp on content, you've got tons of news, reviews and interviews with Blue Holocaust (me!), Last Days of Humanity, Faeces Eruption, Oxidized Razor, Agathocles, Plasma, Abosranie Bogom, Fistfuck, Intestinal Disgorge, Autophagia & even film maker Andrea Schnaas! Layout is OK, could be better but this baby is nearly 100 percent sick goregrind and definitely one of the major zines in activity right now for me... So it obviously comes highly recommended!

BORN DEAD Issue Number 6

Release date: 2005

Review:
Here's another issue of this canadian zine... Once again I'm writing a review about this one long time after the fact since it came out in January... Anyhow... This isn't your typical grind zine... Well, actually it's pretty typical in that it's got the usual brutal band inties and record reviews but what I mean is that on the other hand it's also extremely well-written... The grindy content is intersected with various articles, reports or movie reviews that almost read like short novels; You'll find majorly weird things like something called "Differing Assumptions: Human Rights Activists and Conflict Resolution Specialists Within the Framework of Peace Building" on one page and then a review of the Smothered Brothers/Purulent Spermcanal Split Ep on another(!). Anyway, it seems only 2 bands got interviewed for this issue, but still they're two really good ones, namely General Surgery and Cerebral Turbulency... And the focus of the reviews is grind/death/crust/obscure metal all the way... So, that's about it, a pretty short zine but some really top notch content...

MENTAL FUNERAL #5 - Zine

Release date: 2004

Review:
Sick Flicks and Brutal Music... That about sums it up! This is definitely one of the finest zines around these days. The pages are filled with obscure stuff you probably never heard of... On the musical side, it covers all kinds of things from noise/power electronics to totally underground metal and grind... It features interviews with In Memorium, Viscera, Black Leather Jesus, Inhalant , Archon Satani, Deinonychus, Throneum, Grunt... and even a pretty embarassing one with... me! It's got a shitload of reviews too, again covering various genres of the sleazy/underground variety... Mental Funeral is also quite heavily focused on movies, with tons of awesome film reviews, mostly dealing with exploitation, horror & even old/classic porn! One of the highlights of this issue is an interview with Enzo G. Castellari, cult director of Keoma, High Crime, The Big Racket, Bronx Warriors, Last Shark, etc... All in all, a really killer issue, highly recommended!

BORN DEAD Issue Number 5

Release date: 2004

Review:
I've been slacking around a bit too long with my reviews so it seems like Born Dead #6 is already out by now... So I'm kind of lagging and this issue might be a little outdated... Anyhow, I'll just say this is a really well-written zine... The Born Dead editor is actually also vocalist in Putrescence & Head Hits Conrete (that's the guy I interviewed here) and the main attraction here is a really detailed and insightful Heads Hits Concrete Us tour diary... Quite a fascinating read, touring in the Us does sound like a bumpy road... You'll find a colorful Putrescence gig report in there as well... Interviews concentrate on canadian bands that were then to appear on Arsonfest 2004 (Malefaction, The City Champs, Kursk, etc...) and you've also got a bunch of reviews in the last few pages, mostly grind... Real cool stuff then, pretty short but extremely good... Clever writing style, infinitely more literate than your average grind fanzine... Available for something like 2$...

BRINGER OF GORE Issue 1 - Zine

Release date: 2004

Review:
Very nice zine, great musical taste, a strictly goregrind and grindcore focus, no filler, 100 percent great juicy content... It contains interviews with Lymphatic Phlegm, General Surgery, Putrid Pile, Fondlecorpse... A shitload of insightful reviews. It's only like 30 pages long but still a fantastic read from start to finish, no time to get bored... I think this one is available for free or maybe only a few bucks just to cover postage! Recommended!

MENTAL FUNERAL #3

Release date: 2001

Review: Genuine filth! The best freaking thing I've read in a while (alright I don't read very much at all). The strongest point is the movie reviews in my not so humble opinion. Great stuff! You've got reviews of House on the Edge of the Park, Premutos, Junk, Virgin among the Living Dead, Possession and more... There are also a lot of reviews of obscure grind stuff and some horror soundtracks. The interviews are excellent as well, mostly an awesome Stevo (Impetigo) intie from 98, it seems Impetigo guys will never be out of interesting things to say about the band, good thing! There are also interviews with Nacho Cerda (Aftermath & Genesis director), Control (Power Electronics stuff), Sadistik Execution (from 93) & Prurient/Hospital Prod that are all really neat. You've got funny articles about how to get girls to do nasty things for you just with your computer, I think everyone can figure out how, but it's fun, and you've got some nice pictures coming with it. Mental funeral is a great read from start to finish, I love the way it's layed out, with a lot of obscure exploitation films pictures and old death metal/black metal/grind flyers and stuff adorning the pages; It just leaves me with a great feeling. It's the perfect mix of exploitation cinema & weird underground goodness... Definitely recommended.

EVIL SEMEN Zine (Issue #1 - 40 pages - b/w)

  Release date: 2000

Review: Neat-o zine with pretty much only Grind Grind Goodness, just great stuff, by Jayde of Viscera (Australia). Really well-written reviews (zines, demo, cd, ep & classicks), awesome interviews with nice bands like Regurgitate, Decomposing Serenity, Ironia... and an especially great one with Mark of Impetigo, it also has a lot of sick Impetigo poster artwork for illustration. a lot of the zines I've read lately had Mark interviewed, but it's always very interesting since his answers are so enthusiastic and prolific... I'm never tired of Impetigo interviews. Now, if you look for a killer Grind zine, that makes sense and is well-written, that's just it, you found it. Evil Semen is a great read from beginning to end. It was issued in 2000, it's still available from Jayde (see contact below), and there should be an issue #2 by the end of October, be very afraid!

Interviews: Regurgitate, Decomposing Serenity, Kryptosexual Cancroid, Ironia, Green Beret, Hypo-Christians, Cabal.
Reviews: a lot .

EVIL SEMEN Issue #2

Release date: 2002

Review:
Huh, I'm late for reviewing that, yet ironically, you can find in the very pages of Evil Semen an article that state that "I'm very prompt" to review what I am sent (huh... Very sorry!) Anyway, that is a great zine! A helluva bitchin' zine if you will. It strictly revolves around good grind and more generally good underground stuff. The better written zine around these days if you want my opinion. Reviews are interesting, honest, a bit severe and you can always feel the editor's strong opinion throughout the pages. Great choice of bands for the interviews too, including Macabre, Libido Airbag, C.B.T, Reinfection, Filth, Tu Carne, Fuck... I'm Dead, Lymphatic Phlegm... Plus mucho news, the reviews and so much clever words put together that it makes me dizzy. That's more than 40 pages. If you want a quality grind zine, that's the stuff! Highly recommended.

(I think it's only A$2/US$2/UK£2/2€ from...)

I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (Out of print)

  (Razorback)
Release date: 1999

Review: Here is the amazing first issue of "I spit on your grave", a zine written by people from the label, Razorback Records; It's only about the brutal and sick underground we all support here(I hope?)... Including one great & clever editorial, interesting interviews with among others: Impetigo, Dead Infection, Cryptopsy, Disgorge, Last Days of Humanity, Benumb, Engorged, Nunslaughter, Headfucker zine, Brutalized zine etc... and a really cool reprint of an old Necrony interview!!! There are also quite a lot of well-written reviews; sometimes hard with the bands(mostly with the bands writing lyrics with bad english... like I do... so I won't say anything else about that!...), and some great articles... there aren't many pictures, but I found the layout great, mostly taken from very old horror movies posters... and also lots of GarbagePailKids stickers pix... very funny.

MENTAL FUNERAL

  Release date: 2000

Review: A definitely sick piece of paper. It's short, too short, but it's packed with bloody awesome stuff. I've red it very quickly from the first word to the end. You have great interviews with Warsore, Dim Mak, ATM & Mermaid In A Man Hole. Plus a bunch of cool reviews, only dirty tapes, cds, zines and even obscure splatter trash exploitation movies & soundtracks! The lay-out is the sickest shit ever, the cover is horrible... Totally hardcore porn n' gore shit! Beware if you're not into that kind of dirty stuff. It's made by a guy who's doing another zine called Children of Caine more regularly. I definitely recommend this zine. See contacts below and have fun!
